About English Shepra
Just like a Sherpa guides mountaineers in the Himalaya region, we will guide you along your English learning journey. We are your English Sherpa. By studying just 1 idiom a day, you will improve your fluency and understand more spoken English.
Everyday conversation includes heavy use of formulaic expressions and idioms. In fact, native English speakers use idioms nearly four times every minute! Using these expressions is strongly associated with fluency and proficiency. By learning these expressions, you can increase your understanding and improve your overall communication.
Many courses don’t focus on idioms, and when they do, the idioms are often uncommon and outdated. The curriculum on English Sherpa was designed to include only the most commonly used idioms in modern American English. Many dictionaries, research papers, and textbooks were studied to compile the original list of idioms. Then, we personally looked at each idiom to decide whether it should be included.
We categorized the idioms by usage – situations when you would actually use the expressions. For example, the 15 idioms chosen for Travel Idioms (i.e., a fish out of water, catch some rays) all can be used while you are actually traveling.
The lessons provide the meaning of the idiom, examples, background, cultural significance, and social situations of when they are and aren’t appropriate to use. The comprehension questions not only test grammar conjugation, idiom completion, and definition matching, but also situations of when to use the idiom, correctly paraphrasing the idiom, and usage comprehension.
